Since my early childhood I've been humming songs from Indian movies. During my high school, I learned Tabla for two years. That gave me a basic idea of taals and laya. After joining to IIT, I undertook a guitar course for one year. Unfortunately, by the time I was comfortable with the leads and was about to start learning chords; the class got over. Interestingly, one my friends gifted me a harmonica and I started trying my luck with that and actually quite succeeded also. Meanwhile, another friend of mine in IIT got me interested in Antyaakshari, a famous Indian music event. Towards the end of my stay in IIT Bombay, I learned flute for one month. I could hardly learn how to blow a flute. I also tried my luck with violin but in vain. I kept on wondering, how could one ever play an instruments without frets! After all, guitar itself is quite tough to learn. After coming to UW-Madison, I bought a keyboard and started learning it on my own. I am somewhat comfortable with the melody part but I don't think I can play rhythms without someone teaching me.
